One month ago, the International Atomic Energy Agency issued a resolution containing a phrase the Islamic Republic of Iran hoped never to hear. Iran's "non-compliance" with various protocols and agreements, the UN nuclear watchdog said, has "given rise to questions that are within the competence of the Security Council." While the resolution did not contain a "trigger mechanism" for referring Iran to the Security Council for possible sanctions, as the US has long sought, Washington has seized upon the IAEA resolution to turn up the heat on Tehran.
How did Iran suffer this setback? Is a showdown at the Security Council now in the cards? In " Iran's Nuclear File: The Uncertain Endgame," independent researcher Farideh Farhi details the interplay of international and domestic Iranian politics that led to the current uneasy juncture. Intensified rhetoric notwithstanding, she argues that "the time for an all-out confrontation has not yet arrived. The mundane reason: nobody is ready for it."
Farhi's essay is now available in Middle East Report Online: http://www.merip.org/mero/mero102405.html

Proponents of Intelligent Design have exploited a vexing question at the heart of Darwin's theory. Scientists can - and must - answer back. "We shouldn't dismiss questions, even if some are ill-intentioned," says Marc Kirschner, founding chair of the Department of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School. "But at the same time, we need to realize that science has real answers to these questions."

VICE PRESIDENT Cheney is aggressively pursuing an initiative that may be unprecedented for an elected official of the executive branch: He is proposing that Congress legally authorize human rights abuses by Americans.
